Wybunbury Moss // South Cheshire

A floating peatbog. Glacial. Time floats on a swinging platform, hosting life.

Wybunbury Moss is a National Nature Reserve managed by Natural England and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, rich in natural life and a reminder of the glacial pace of time. It is a Schwingmoor – a German word for ‘swinging bog’ – where the peat floats on a basin of water. It is one of four sites that comprise the West Midlands Mosses Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

This film was captured during a guided tour, led by Jenni Tibbetts of Natural England. The poetry, in turn, was guided by the terminology I learned on this visit. Naming nature makes it real and detailed and difficult to ignore – the specificity of language acknowledges the diversity of life found in this particular ecology, and gives emphasis to the urgency for protection, preservation and care.

Inspired by the Environmental Storytelling project at Keele University, with thanks to Pawas Bisht and Ceri Morgan.
